Creating Value Through Innovation, Quality and Return on Investment

The agricultural and manufacturing sectors are operating in an increasingly demanding environment, and in a changing market, standing still is not an option.

The agricultural and manufacturing sectors are operating in an increasingly demanding environment.

Farmers are under pressure from rising input costs, water constraints, weather volatility, energy costs and demanding local and international markets. At the same time, customers are becoming more discerning. They are no longer simply looking for the lowest purchase price; they are looking for products that deliver measurable value over their useful life.

For Multiknit, Knittex and Sakpro, this changing environment reinforces something we have believed for many years:

The cheapest product is not necessarily the lowest-cost solution.

Our focus therefore remains firmly on quality, innovation, productivity and return on investment (ROI).

We are investing in products that help our customers protect their crops, improve productivity, reduce risk, and achieve a better return from every hectare and every rand invested.

FROM COST TO ROI

One of the biggest changes we see in the market is the need to move the conversation from price to value.

A farmer buying shade netting is not really buying square metres of fabric. They are investing in the crop underneath that fabric.

Similarly, a packhouse purchasing vegetable bags is not simply buying packaging. It is investing in the protection, presentation, and transportability of valuable produce.

The correct question is therefore not:

“What is the price?”

It is:

“What does this product contribute to my bottom line?”

That is the philosophy behind our product development.

A quality product can deliver value through longer service life, reduced waste, improved crop quality, reduced product losses, improved pack-out, greater reliability and lower maintenance requirements.

ROI = Value Created ÷ Total Cost of Ownership

This approach is becoming increasingly important as agricultural businesses carefully evaluate every capital and operating expenditure.

SPECTRANET PREMIUM - PROTECTING THE VALUE OF THE CROP

At Knittex, we continue to invest heavily in agricultural netting solutions that provide growers with more than simple shade.

SpectraNet Premium represents our focus on the next generation of agricultural crop protection.

Modern fruit production requires growers to manage much more than sunlight. Light quality, temperature, water utilisation, wind, weather extremes and fruit quality all influence the final return from an orchard or vineyard.

SpectraNet has been developed around this broader understanding of the crop environment.

Knittex's manufacturing philosophy is based on producing fabrics to exact specifications, using quality polyethylene, pigments, and UV inhibitors, supported by rigorous testing including burst, tear and shade testing.

But specifications alone do not tell the whole story.

The real test is the value delivered to the grower.

For a high-value fruit crop, even a relatively small improvement in marketable production can have a significant financial impact.

If improved crop protection contributes to:

  • better pack-out,

  • reduced fruit damage,

  • improved marketable quality,

  • more consistent production,

  • better water utilisation, or

  • reduced environmental stress,

the financial value can be substantially greater than the initial cost difference between alternative products.

This is why we encourage growers to compare performance and total ROI, rather than simply comparing price per square metre.

SpectraNet Premium is part of our commitment to helping growers produce more consistently, more efficiently and with greater confidence.

INNOVATION DOESN'T STOP

Our product-development program continues across the Group.

The market is changing, and our customers' requirements are changing with it. We therefore continue to investigate new materials, constructions, weights, applications, and manufacturing technologies.

One example is our development of a new-generation 400 gsm mono/mono knitted decorative fabric.

This product represents an important step forward in the decorative market, providing a substantially heavier fabric construction for applications where strength, appearance, durability, and premium performance are important.

The objective is not simply to manufacture a heavier product.

It is to develop a product that creates additional value for the customer.

That is the difference between product development and meaningful innovation.

SAKPRO – STRONGER BAGS, GREATER CONFIDENCE

Innovation is also taking place within Sakpro.

Vegetable packaging is a critical part of the agricultural supply chain. The bag has to perform from the moment produce is harvested until it reaches the customer.

That means handling, filling, stacking, transport and repeated movement through the supply chain all place demands on the packaging.

We have therefore been working on improvements to the strength and performance of our Sakpro vegetable bags.

The objective is straightforward:

A stronger bag means greater confidence throughout the supply chain.

Improved bag strength can help reduce failures during filling, handling, and transport, helping to protect the product inside and minimise avoidable losses.

For growers, packhouses and distributors, this is important because the real cost of a packaging failure is much greater than the cost of the bag itself.

A damaged bag can mean:

lost product + additional handling + labour + repacking + rejected product + customer dissatisfaction.

That is why packaging must be evaluated according to its total cost and performance, not simply its purchase price.

Our focus at Sakpro is therefore to continually improve the balance between strength, functionality, consistency, and cost efficiency.

QUALITY IS OUR COMMON THREAD

Although Multiknit, Knittex and Sakpro serve different markets, they share the same fundamental philosophy.

We manufacture products that are expected to perform.

Knittex focuses on agricultural, industrial, and decorative knitted fabrics.

Sakpro focuses on agricultural packaging solutions.

Multiknit International extends our products and capabilities into international markets.

Together, these businesses form a Group built around manufacturing expertise, product development and long-term customer relationships.

Our customers operate in markets where failure is expensive.

A failed shade net can expose a crop.

A poor-quality bag can result in product losses.

An inferior product can increase maintenance, replacement and operating costs.

That is why quality is not simply a marketing statement.

Quality is part of the customer's ROI.

LOOKING AHEAD

The agricultural market will continue to change.

Weather patterns will remain unpredictable. Water will become increasingly valuable. Energy and input costs will remain important considerations. Export markets will continue demanding quality and consistency, while customers across the supply chain will increasingly scrutinise their cost structures.

These challenges create opportunities for companies willing to innovate.

Our response is not to chase the market with cheaper products.

Our response is to develop better products that solve real customer problems.

Whether it is SpectraNet Premium helping growers protect high-value crops, stronger Sakpro vegetable bags helping protect produce through the supply chain, or new high-performance knitted fabrics creating new opportunities in the decorative market, our objective remains the same:

Create more value for our customers.

We want every customer to be able to look at a Multiknit, Knittex or Sakpro product and understand not only what it costs, but what it contributes to their business.

Because ultimately, the strongest measure of a product is not its price.

It is its performance.

And the strongest measure of performance is the return it delivers on the customer's investment.
